Experience in making of Whisky and Gin
Behind 2K Whisky am I, Kristijan Kurade. But the very beginnings of 2K Whisky date back to before I was born. It all started when my father founded his brewery, then one of the few in Slovenia. With that, he started perfecting his beer brewing. After a few years, with his knowledge of brewing barley malt for beer, he had a very good basis for brewing whisky. Cooking barley malt for beer is actually very similar to cooking barley malt for whisky. With practice, experience, and a desire to create whisky, he succeeded. That is how Slovenian whisky was made in the 1990s.
A friend from abroad with a Ph.D. helped him with the complete recipe, which dates back several generations. My father had to vow that he would hand over the recipe only to his successor. So the love of whisky from my father has now been passed on to me.
I received the special recipe, but not all at once. I received it piece by piece by making mistakes, learning from them, and, most importantly, correcting those mistakes as well. My experience in welding stainless steel has also helped me tremendously. I build most of my small distillery, like my father his, on my own. With all this, I developed a special taste that excites me and gives me joy and motivation for the future.
So now in front of you is 2K Whisky – my whisky.
2K Gin
The father of today’s best-known gin, London dry, is genever gin. Evidence of its existence is at least a thousand years old. Genever originates from the Netherlands. During the long war, soldiers strengthened themselves with juniper brandy, called Dutch courage. This miraculous drink later begins to appear throughout Europe. It became more recognizable and widespread in the 17th century. The result of this was London dry gin, a well-known English spirit. To date, several types of this popular drink have been developed.
- genever
- London dry gin
- dry gin
- Old Tom gin
- Cold compound gin
- Bathtub gin
- Navy strength gin…
Gin is a clear spirit that is not aged, made from juniper berries and herbs. Our gin is not typical for the Slovenian market, as it is genever. This means that we do not buy the alcohol but make it in our own production from barley malt and corn. Because of this, you can feel the fresh note of natural alcohol in the gin. After that, several herbs of selected flavours are macerated in alcohol. This is followed by a second distillation, after which only distilled water is added to the gin. This is to reach the drinkable strength of this wonderful drink. The special feature of our gin is that it is suitable for drinking without a tonic. But in the case of mixing, we recommend a larger dose of gin than with London dry.
To summarise, gin genever without added herbs could be classified as whiskey by aging it in oak barrels. The combination of raw whiskey and fresh notes of fruit and herbs delivers a perfect balance to your taste buds. We are happy to present “Slovenian courage” to you in our online store, wishing you a lot of courage when drinking 2K GIN.
